Pre-trip – #Mexico Movie Homework

This is #travel pre-trip homework, but a homework that you will probably enjoy and that will allow you to get in the mood of the place you are heading. Be careful, sometimes this could be a daunting or misleading activity if you don’t know that what you will see it’s a partial (sometimes hollywedense-glass view) approach to reality. Anyway, it’s a good way to virtually transport you there and/or help you connect with its society, its #culture and #history.

Frida-Kahlo-Two-Fridas-1939FridaFrida Khalo de Rivera, was a famous mexican painter well known for her self-portraits, but also for her story of love and tragedy with other mexican famous painter Diego Rivera. The “Blue House” (Museum) and the mural painting from Diego Rivera (at National Palace) are “must visits” while in #Mexico DF. So, watching the movie, could be a good way to understand the story behind this strong woman and her legacy to the mexican cultural heritage.

5 de Mayo – La Batalla (5th of May – The Battle) – Did you know that France tried to establish a Monarchy in Mexico? On this movie you can understand about this historical event, a big proud for mexicans , who on the 5th of May of 1862 defeated one of the strongest europeans empires of the time: France, who invaded their country with an outnumbered force. The war would continue but the brave determination to hold positions and defend their homeland on this battle would remain forever on mexican militar history.

amores-perros_3484Amores Perros (Love’s a Bitch) – Nominated to Academy Awards as Best Foreign Film, and also awarded as Best Film in several film festivals, this movie -starring famous mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal and now famous Director Alejandro González Iñárrituis a bold, intensely emotional, and ambitious story of lives that collide in a Mexico City car crash.Inventively structured as a triptych of overlapping and intersecting narratives, “Amores Perros” explores the lives of disparate characters who are catapulted into unforeseen dramatic situations instigated by the seemingly inconsequential destiny of a dog named Cofi.” – Wikipedia description that I leverage, as besides I watched it, I didn’t know how to describe it.

Y tu mama también (And your mother too) – If we are writing about travelling, this #road movie has to be on the list. “In Mexico, two teenage boys and an attractive older woman embark on a road trip and learn a thing or two about life, friendship, sex, and each other”. You may feel identified on some of the events of this movie, but you will probably enjoy this friendship adventure.

Nosotros Los Nobles (The Nobles Family) – This blockbuster movie produced by Warner Bros was the most successful film in mexican theater history with about 6.7 millions of viewers – besides it could be “a silly comedy” it doesn’t avoid one of the main contrast in mexican society: the difference between poor and rich people and the way that difference is highlighted in a society where middle-class struggles to keep its status.

I will try to keep these lists up to five, so you can check them out, but for sure you can find more material -or maybe more interesting ones- that you would enjoy more to do the pre-immersion about your destination country. If you have any advice or suggestions on movies for Mexico, please comment below. If you have seen any of them, also let us know your thoughts on the comments below. Popcorn ready?! Enjoy this fun homework!
